Job Title: Bard DNA (Diverse Network of Action) Summer Program Faculty PositionsProject SummaryBard High School Early College (BHSEC) Queens is committed to increasing high school graduation and postsecondary degree completion rates for historically underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged students. This summer, we are hosting a summer program for 45-55 of our incoming ninth-grade students. The Bard DNA Summer Program is designed to support students from historically underrepresented and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds in their academic and social transition from NYC middle schools to BHSEC Queens. The program will promote growth in social and emotional connections to BHSEC Queens and develop familiarity with academic routines that will be important to incoming ninth graders in the year ahead.OpportunityBHSEC Queens is seeking (3-5) faculty members to teach in our Bard DNA summer program. The faculty members will teach a three-week course in their area of expertise and will work closely with the Director/Associate Director of Bard DNA and Bard DNA Peer Mentors/Student Volunteers. Faculty members will immerse students in engaging coursework and connect with students to discuss strategies for academic growth and advancement.The summer program will take place in-person at BHSEC Queens. Orientation and Training, for all Summer Faculty and Peer Mentors/Student Volunteers, will be held from Monday, June 30th - Thursday, July 3 and the summer program will run from Monday, July 7 - Friday, July 25, 9:00am - 4:00pm. On Fridays, times will vary, as those days are set aside for field trips. On Friday, July 18, we will go on our field trip to Bard College. This day will be from 7:00am-6:30pm. We will be hiring faculty members in math/computing, science, physical education, humanities, and the arts. Join us as an Instructor/Facilitator for NYLF Pathways to STEM!Held in several cities nationwide, NYLF Pathways to STEM is a unique learning experience for bright, forward-thinking elementary school students who will evolve into next generation innovators, engineers, doctors, software developers, and scientists. Students learn by doing during hands-on simulations and workshops with like-minded peers.Join us as an instructor/facilitator for the beef heart dissection activity, typically held as two 90 minute rotations over the course of one afternoon. The dissection activity takes place in multiple locations, dates may differ depending on location, but dissection activities will all take place on an afternoon in June or July (typical timing is 2 PM-5:15 PM). Typically our facilitators include researchers, engineers, and/or medical academics or professionals. We invite all participants to share their education background, career journey, professional experiences and general advice with the students. How will the students prepare for the calf heart dissection? Students review the structure of a heart as it pertains to the Pathways to STEM curriculum. They will label a diagram of a heart, and learn the basics of what each part of the heart does. Following this, you will come in to facilitate the dissection and answer any questions that the scholars may have. Who will be in attendance? Students attending NYLF Pathways to STEM come from all across the country and represent a variety of backgrounds. Primarily elementary school-aged rising 3th and 6th graders, the students are selected based on scholastic merit, scientific interest, community involvement, and leadership experiences. What are the expectations for facilitators? The facilitator should be prepared to: 1. Answer questions about their personal and professional experiences. 2. Thoroughly explain the anatomy of the calf-heart and narrate the actions that they are taking during the dissection. 3. Offer advice/opinions on how students can prepare for successful future careers. What is the dress code for this event? Facilitators should dress comfortably with business casual as the recommended attire. Payment is $150 stipend per event.
