    Job Summary This position has been posted at both the Hydrologist 1 and the Hydrologist 2 classifications and will be filled according to the qualifications of the applicant hired. The DNR is seeking to hire one (1) permanent full-time Hydrologist 1 OR Hydrologist 2, located in Hibbing, MN. The Hydrologist 1 position will assist with hydrologic and hydrogeologic evaluation and review of new and existing metallic, non-metallic and peat mining projects, as well as some municipal water supplies. This position performs field work in the form of monitoring equipment installation, maintenance, and data collection, and also performs data management and the analysis of collected data. The position assists with technical review of environmental review documents, as well as hydrologic studies and data for new and amended water appropriation and public waters work permits and permits to mine.The Hydrologist 2 position provides a comprehensive and thorough hydrologic and hydrogeologic evaluation and review of new and existing metallic, non-metallic and peat mining projects, as well as some municipal water supplies. The position provides technical expertise during the preparation of environmental review documents and during the review of hydrologic studies and data for new and amended water appropriation and public waters work permits and permits to mine. This position performs duties associated with preparing water appropriation permits and public waters work permits. This position also performs field work in the form of monitoring equipment installation and maintenance and data collection, as well as the management of collected data. Responsibilities for the Hydrologist 1 include but are not limited to: • Assist with hydrologic and hydrogeologic evaluations of new and existing mining and mining-related projects Provide support for the administration of DNR Water Permit Programs. • Conduct field work in the form of monitoring equipment installation, maintenance, and data collection. • Assist with the processing, review and archival of surface water and groundwater data. • Perform duties associated with drafting documents associated with water appropriation permits and public waters work permits. • Perform other assigned tasks so that priority technical support services are delivered professionally.  Responsibilities for the Hydrologist 2 include but are not limited to: • Review and provide hydrologic and hydrogeologic evaluations of new and existing mining and mining-related projects that are undergoing environmental review and/or permitting so potential hydrologic and hydrogeologic impacts are understood, allowing the state to disclose potential impacts and require appropriate action to minimize and monitor them as appropriate. • Provide support for the administration of DNR Water Permit Programs. Assist in preparation of water appropriation and public waters work permits. • Perform field work and analyze and manage both historic and recently collected data to support a monitoring program that furthers the understanding of surface and groundwater hydrology across the Mesabi Iron Range and other mining regions as needed and helps to address potential impacts of mining activities. • Perform tasks and responsibilities as required or assigned by leadership, such as preparing maps, technical memos and presentations, or participating on work-planning groups or committees, so that goals and objectives are met.  Either position has a flexible work arrangement and may be eligible to telework on a part-time basis which is subject to change. If approved, the employee would be required to complete a telework agreement. This position will require reporting to the primary work location on a regular basis. Minimum Qualifications Transcripts are required for both the Hydrologist 1 and Hydrologist 2. Applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be sent instructions for transcript review after the posting close date. • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, Hydrology, Forest Hydrology, Geography, Geology, Geophysics, Hydrogeology, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, Soil Science, Water Resources Management, Hydraulics, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related major.  Transcript requirements: • Three hydrology qualifying courses in the areas of: Hydrology, Hydraulics, Hydrogeology/Groundwater Hydrology, Water Resources Engineering, Hydrologic Modeling, Watershed Management, Groundwater, Fluid Mechanics, fluvial geomorphology; OR • Two hydrology qualifying courses and two courses (or equivalent experience) in: Geology, Geomorphology, Geochemistry, Geography, Limnology, Erosion and Sediment Control, Environmental Engineering, Soils. The Hydrologist 2 must minimally also have: • 2 years of professional experience in surface water or groundwater hydrology, soil and water resource management, hydrogeology, hydrologic modeling, geochemistry or regulatory work. • A Master's in the appropriate major (see the above education requirements) may substitute for 1 year and 6 months of experience. • Experience collecting surface water or groundwater data. • Experience with technical writing and ability to draft documents that are clear, organized, and grammatically sound. • Experience working in databases, such as database entry or preparing data for database submittal.  Additional qualifications for both classifications: • Technical knowledge of hydrology, hydrogeology, hydraulics, principles and practices of water resource management. • Technical knowledge of land surveying, groundwater and stream flow measurement procedures, and/or use of hydrologic monitoring equipment. • Knowledge of hydrologic data collection, compilation and review including database, spreadsheet, and desktop publishing applications to compile, analyze and present hydrologic data. • Ability to effectively communicate and work as a team member and follow policies and procedures while consistently conducting oneself in a cooperative and courteous manner. • Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities in a safe manner by following correct work procedure and using required personal protective equipment. • Ability to plan and track work amidst competing demands to ensure work products are completed in a timely manner.  Preferred Qualifications For the Hydrologist 1: • Experience installing and maintaining hydrologic monitoring equipment. • Experience working with data loggers, pressure transducers, Acoustic Doppler and standard stream flow monitoring equipment, and/or weather stations. • Experience working in databases, such as database entry or preparing data for database submittal, and database management. • Work experience with mapping applications such as ArcGIS Pro. • At least one course in hydrogeology/groundwater geology.  For the Hydrologist 2: • An advanced degree in any of the disciplines listed above.• At least one course in hydrogeology/groundwater hydrology.• Possess the education requirements for licensure as a Professional Geologist in Minnesota. • Knowledge of and experience applying water regulations, statutes, rules, and policies.  • Work experience with mapping applications such as ArcGIS Pro. • Knowledge of aquifer test data analysis methods and experience analyzing data from aquifer tests. • Experience with surface water and/or groundwater modeling.• Knowledge of and experience with well drilling methods. • Experience working with data loggers, pressure transducers, Acoustic Doppler and standard stream flowing monitoring equipment, and/or weather stations. • Experience with database management. Additional Requirements This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record. Applicants must have the ability to meet the physical requirements and work in the environmental conditions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.     Kofa Biological Technician - AmeriCorps (1 opening) Conservation Legacy Program: Arizona Conservation Corps Site Location: Kofa National Wildlife Refuge (9300 E. 28th St, Yuma, AZ 85365)  Term of Service:Start Date: 6/2/2025 (anticipated)End Date: 5/29/2026AmeriCorps Slot Classification: Two 900 hour terms, served back-to-back   Purpose:This is an AmeriCorps position with Arizona Conservation Corps (AZCC), which is an AmeriCorps program of Conservation Legacy. The member selected for this position will be serving at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge as an AmeriCorps member with Arizona Conservation Corps, and completing service projects for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. AZCC aims to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930's, and is focused on connecting youth, young adults, and recent era military veterans with communities and conservation service projects on public lands. AZCC operates programs across Arizona that engage individuals and strengthen communities through service and conservation. AZCC has program offices in Flagstaff and Tucson.   Partner Agency:The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, working with others, is responsible for conserving, protecting, and enhancing fish and wildlife and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people through Federal programs relating to migratory birds, endangered species, interjurisdictional fish and marine mammals, and inland sport fisheries. As part of its mission, the USFWS is charged with enforcing Federal Wildlife Laws and Protecting Endangered Species. The 666,000-acre Kofa National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Arizona was established in 1939 for the protection of Desert Bighorn sheep populations and their habitat. The refuge is also one of a few locations with a population of the federally listed Sonoran Pronghorn. Other species found in Kofa include badgers, foxes, ground squirrels, pocket mice, and kangaroo rats. This vast desert environment is home to one of the few native palm tree populations to Arizona, as well as numerous mammal species, the majority of which are nocturnal and forage at night while the temperatures is cooler. The Refuge is headquartered in Yuma, Arizona.   Description of Duties:The Biological Technician intern will assist the Refuge staff with daily operations through a variety of tasks on the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge (Kofa NWR). The majority of work on the Refuge revolves around managing habitat and water resources for the Desert Bighorn sheep and the Sonoran Pronghorn, which includes removal of invasive species, construction, and repair of water catchments, hauling water to catchments and wildlife drinkers, and educating the public about these species and the Refuge in general.  Kofa NWR also supports a large, designated wilderness (547,719 acres), which requires monitoring for and correction of illegal wilderness incursions by vehicles. Other duties will be to assist with NEPA documentation, wilderness reporting, and data management for the extensive camera trap project on the Refuge. Professional development funds are available to assist the intern with career and educational development during their term.  Training that will be provided includes 4x4 driving, trailer use, basic map reading skills, GPS navigation, safety communication, fieldwork safety, native plant identification, invasive plant ID and removal techniques, water facility measurement expectations, pronghorn animal husbandry, bird and bat ID, tortoise surveying, best practices for safe public interactions, FWS policy on social media, Survey123, restoration techniques, and Introduction to Minimum Requirements Analysis and NEPA process.Housing is available for the intern during their term.  Essential Responsibilities and Functions:Monitor and measure water resources by documenting max depth and estimating volume where appropriate. Record water level data in the Kofa Water Resource database, report low water levels and any maintenance needs to Kofa Biologist. Maintain water resources by completing minor repairs to water facilities such as fixing float valves, clearing pipes, cleaning collection points, and turning windmills off or on.Drive water trailers to water facilities, lay out hoses, and operate pumps to deliver water.Assist with Sonoran pronghorn recovery activities by providing care for semi-captive Sonoran pronghorn at the Kofa pen, maintain electrical and barbed wire fencing.Feed and water pronghorn, document and report their condition to Kofa Biologist and Arizona Game and Fish Department.Assist with pronghorn translocation efforts by setting up and removing capture bomas and release pens. Perform assigned duties for pronghorn capture as described in capture plan.Assist with invasive plant surveys, identify invasive plants and report to Kofa Biologist, document in GIS Refuge Management Database.Conduct invasive plant eradication by using hand-pulling, tool, and herbicide application methods, document treatment activities in GIS Refuge Management Actions database.Assist with annual North American Breeding Bird Survey.Assist with bat surveys by documenting exit counts of bats at roost sites through use of night vision equipment.Assist with bat mist netting and data collection, document species, measurements, and breeding status.
